Fall in Love with Your Business
Are you exhausted?
Do you feel like you are ready to throw in the towel?
Some days, the entrepreneur life is hard. The days can feel so loooong when there’s an endless to do list to complete and so little time to do it all. You feel caught in a cycle of early mornings, late nights, and never-ending tasks. Then suddenly, it happens—the business you once loved begins to break your spirit. Burnout is not uncommon for the business owner, especially during the long winter months. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately, take heart! Today, I am sharing strategies to help you find your focus and prevent you from falling out of love with your business.
In honor of Valentine’s Day, here are my three steps to rekindle the flame for your work.
1) Remember Your Why. Take a step back, way back to the beginning. Remember when you started your business and think of the reasons why you started all of this in the first place. What change did you hope to bring to the world? Think about the passion you felt for your new endeavor and how you wanted to make your mark in your chosen industry. Make sure you remind yourself often of these reasons and reconnect with your origin story as much as possible. Place your “why” in a prominent place in your office—in a frame on your desk or on your screensaver to daily affirm your purpose.
2) Think About Your Favorite Client. Remember a time when you made a real impact in your client’s life—when you helped them make a transformation and experience results. Revisiting and celebrating those big wins can motivate you to continue down this entrepreneurial path and to be ready to take on the next dream client.
3) Take a Mental Break. Yes, even if you are swamped and your to do list is a mile long! It may seem counterproductive, but you must give yourself some time away from your business to recharge. Make it a priority to take time out of your busy week for self-care. Put it on your calendar just as you would schedule a meeting. This will not only guarantee it actually happens, but it will give you something to look forward to. Sometimes, we simply need to make space to relax and unwind to remind us of what we love about our business.
4) Count Your Blessings. Spend time reminding yourself why you love your business—how it makes you feel, all of the perks it brings into your life, etc. As an entrepreneur, you have the unique opportunity to shape your own destiny. You are free to work where you want, when you want, and with who you want. Does your business allow you the freedom and flexibility to spend more time with your family or to travel? Does it give you the opportunity to focus on your strengths and do the things you really love to do? Remind yourself often of these benefits. I recently put pen to paper and listed 3 things I love about my business as a brand photographer and strategist.
The Flow of Ideas. I love to brainstorm— the back and forth of ideas, stories and thoughts that can develop into something powerful. I love to think outside of the box and be innovative. I love the creativity process, especially when I get the opportunity to work with a group of creative thinkers. When many minds come together, that’s when the magic happens!
Storytelling. "I can't help it. I am a storyteller. I create experiences." A friend once shared this quote with me, and it perfectly describes how I feel! I love the connection and experience that a story can bring. It breaks down walls, builds bridges between people, and inspires others to share their own stories. I love helping my clients discover the layers to their story. And yes, we all have a story to tell!
Community. My business allows me to be a part of an amazing, supportive network of entrepreneurs who offer invaluable support and community. It can be lonely when you are a solopreneur, so you must find your people and invest in those relationships. Your community will be your safety net, your cheerleading squad and your catalyst all in one. I am passionate about creating business relationships through collaborations, partnerships, alliances, masterminds, etc. We are better together and as a result build better businesses!
