3 Branding Myths to Stop Telling Yourself | NJ Brand Mentor

Determine who you are and what your brand is, and what you're not. The rest of it is just a lot of noise.” – Geoffrey Zakarian

The concept of branding can be confusing. There are a lot of myths floating around out there that can point you in the WRONG direction. As you work, sweat, and fight to grow your company, it’s important to have a firm grasp on what branding is and why it’s so important to the health of your business.

If you are guilty of believing the following myths, it’s time to drop these limiting beliefs that are getting in the way of your growth potential.

1 — “I have a logo, so I am branded.”

Branding is more than your logo. Yes, your logo is a part of your brand, but a brand is so much more. A logo is a simple graphic that represents your brand, NOT the full package. Branding is more than your tagline or website; it’s the language you use, the colors and fonts you choose; it can include your packaging and product design, even the look of your office. But more than that, branding is your messaging and what showcases your personality. It encapsulates your values and mission and creates an impression and experience with your audience. Branding is the story that your business speaks to the world.

2 — “My business is too small to worry about branding.”

There’s a common misconception in the business world that branding is only meant for the big companies. This could not be further from the truth. Branding is for big and small businesses. No matter the size of your business, you must establish your own brand identity to thrive. In today's competitive marketplace, it's the way to get noticed, stand out, and connect with your audience.

The good news? Thanks to the ease and accessibility of technology, anyone really can create a consistent brand. Yes, it will take some soul searching and a lot of hard work, but it is within your reach. Branding is no longer just for the big dogs.

3 — “My budget isn’t big enough for branding.”

Can branding be expensive? Yes. Does it have to be? Not at all. You do not, I repeat, you do NOT need a big budget to successfully brand your business.

In today's digital world, there are so many ways to share your story for free. Utilize social media. Learn how to create images yourself. Hire an affordable VA. Do what you can with what you have at the moment. Don’t strive for perfection right off the bat — just do SOMETHING.

The truth is, you can’t afford NOT to brand.

If you want your biz to grow and prosper, you can't ignore the need for branding. If you don't invest the time it takes to craft your brand and message, others will, and you’ll get passed over, ignored or left behind. That's just the hard core facts.

To add to this, consumers' attention spans are shrinking, cynicism is growing and the noise factor is deafening. We must develop brands that connect with our audience to stay relevant and meaningful.
